I wanted to do something that demonstrated my passion for digital animation, but also my love of building physical things. I had a lot of fun making this short video and I hope you have a lot of fun watching it!

Sent two links - this is the real one.

Subject: Tube Hack - Art with shoe polish

Hi!

Attached are the pictures of my tube hack. I’ve always loved art and creativity, thus I decided to make something artistic and creative :). I coated the shiny tube with black shoe polish, waited for it to dry, and then, using a needle, I scraped some of the polish to reveal the silver layer beneath it, forming a drawing. I called it the tree of my education. Yes, it’s a tree, and near the base you can see the names of my parents. As you go up, you can see the emblem of my K-8 school, the mascot of the first high school I attended, the logo of my current high school, and the logo of the community college I attended in my junior and senior years. Right above all that is MIT’s logo and the characteristic dome. If you look closely, you may also find words that define me c:.

Best,
Francesca Majluf

Here is the link to the video of my tube hack. I would have sent the cookies to the admissions department, but by the time they got to Boston from Portugal, they would have undoubtedly been stale!

In memory of Sean Collier, who was probably on duty protecting myself and the other 2017 prefrosh during CPW. The text reads “MIT Class of 2017 thanks you for your service.”

I think this is the email address where I’m supposed to send hacks to. For my hack, I decided to write MIT an acceptance letter and sent it along with a few other things. (I’ve included a picture of the letter MIT originally sent me. I didn’t put this letter in the tube. I just included the picture for comparison to the letter I wrote.)

Hi MIT team!

Here’s my tube hack. Hope you enjoy it, just as much as I enjoyed hacking it!

Cheers from Malaysia!

My tube looked kind of flammable. So I thought it would be a good idea to make it even more flammable with Hydrogen gas! Inside the tube is a graduated cylinder with 100 mL of 6M HCl (that’s .6 mol) and a balloon over it. The balloon has .6 mol of Zinc in it, so when the zinc falls in it’ll create Hydrogen gas, which I then caused to have a relatively violent reaction with the air. Apparently those balloons are made of sturdy stuff, because instead of popping as I have seen before, a hole formed, it shot about two feet of flame at me, and the balloon itself caught on fire.
Because Science is a group effort, I was aided by members of my school’s Science Olympiad team (we got first at regionals!)

I brought my tube with me to the start of a dream - the southern terminus of the Pacific Crest Trail on the U.S. border with Mexico in Campo, California. We had no idea the fence would say that! Maybe the tube knew all along…

Credit to my father dearest for the pictures and the dream.

41 miles down, 2,663 mi to go.

See you at CPW. :)

Thanks for everything,

Marol
